This course will explore the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during World War II and its lasting impact on Dutch society, using the experience of Anne Frank as a starting point. Participants will become familiar with how the Holocaust was perpetrated in the Netherlands and the extent to which members of Dutch society resisted, remained passive, or collaborated, and how personal convictions and ethical dilemmas shaped how they responded. Furthermore, the course will explore how World War II was a watershed for other important transformations in Dutch society, particularly the struggle to accept the end of its global empire.
