Together, APPLES Service-Learning & Communication Beyond Carolina will let us learn deeply how to be in community well with others. This course requires 30 hours of service beyond the classroom and the ability to travel to a school in Orange County. The ideals of community are often utopian and high-minded. The work of community is often small, steady, consistent, and scrappy. This semester we use our in-class time to examine the communication basis of communication and community ideals, and examine how those ideas intersect with our semester-long experience of serving as a community member in a local school.
