Palestine/Israel in Literature and Film.

Catalog description

This course introduces students to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through its representation and thematization in literature, film, song, and other artistic mediums that complement and compete with historical scholarship and journalism. It focuses on the events of 1948, known as al-Nakba (the catastrophe) to Palestinians and atzmaut (independence) to Israelis, and their reverberations through the present. Many of the works we explore will be paired with historical and theoretical readings, and all of the literature we read will be in translation from the Arabic and Hebrew, with originals made available for those with knowledge of the language(s).
