This course explores pre-Roman Italy (2000-400 BCE) through archaeological evidence. Students will examine diverse material culture, from monumental structures to everyday objects, to reconstruct ancient Italic societies. Topics include urbanization, social stratification, religious practices, gender dynamics, and economic systems. The course emphasizes understanding these cultures through their material traces rather than later Roman perspectives. Students will learn how archaeologists interpret artifacts to illuminate daily life, political structures, and cultural changes. Case studies will demonstrate various archaeological approaches, integrating historical content with methodological instruction throughout the course.
