Catalog description

Course examines the concept and histories of small wars in Asia and the ME since 1945. Focuses on interdisciplinary methods using art, films, and novels as modes of analysis working with material culture, oral history, archival documents, photographs, and maps to produce reinterpreted accounts of asymmetrical warfare in Asia. Uses Malayan Emergency, Indonesian wars, Vietnamese and Lebanese civil wars, ethnic conflicts in Myanmar and Türkiye, and US Occupation of Iraq to problematize the idea of "small wars" and the role of ethnic and religious identities across wider Asian conflicts and the various artistic approaches to making sense of these wars.
