This course examines issues of femininity and sexuality in Chinese painting from the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.) to the end of dynastic China in the nineteenth century. Course topics include the ways in which pictures of women help to craft the notion of femininity in pre-modern Chinese society and the differing roles of women as painters, patronesses, and collectors.
