This course delves into the theme of landscape, or "mountains and waters" (shanshui), which has been a central subject of artistic expression in China since the tenth century. We will explore a selection of landscape paintings from the tenth century through to the early eighteenth century. Students will be introduced to key interpretive approaches for understanding and examining landscapes as both artistic and social entities in pre-modern China.
