University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
Africa is both the past and the future of art making: the earliest known art by humans was created there, and African artists are featured in major exhibitions all over the world. This introduction to African art will address many types of art (including sculpture, painting, architecture, textiles, and masquerades) in many different social contexts (ceremony, politics, royalty, domestic arenas, cross-cultural exchanges, colonialism, postcolonialism, the international art world). We will visit the African art collection at the Ackland Museum of Art.
