Catalog description

. This course examines hip hop’s historical origin in the United States and its global spread to Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. We will explore how youth throughout the world increasingly draw on U.S. hip hop to address their own experiences of marginality, exploitation, and displacement, localizing the music in ways that create a multiplicity of models that complicate the cultural transmission of a global art form.
