Crime Mapping and Policy Analysis

Pre- or Co-requisite: CRJU 4060 . Co or pre-requisite all other majors: GEOG 3435 or GEOG 2020 . This course will examine contemporary practices for the digital anaylsis and measurement of crime via the use of geographical informaiton systems (GIS) to map various aspects of crime. Modern crime analysis focuses on reudcing crime and improving police efficiency by illustrating the impact of crime on the community and Crime anaylsis facilities data-informed decision making on criminal activity and prevention, thereby being instrumental in helping crime analysis function within the law enforcement organization and a demonstration of how to develop, implement, and operate a crime anaylsis unit within the confines of a GIS. Impact on other departments/programs: Given the needs for crime analysts in the emerging field marrying geographic information systems and criminal justice, this course is attractive to both DEEGS majors who want to apply GIS to the field of criminal justice and policy and those Criminal Justice majors who do not want to enter into law enforcement.
