This course introduces students to the structure of semiconductors, metals, ceramic, polymers and composite materials, and the physical principles underlying the relationship of a material’s structure to its optical, thermal, electrical and mechanical properties. The course is designed to provide a scientific foundation that can be to understand material properties and optimize material properties through rational design. (Three lecture hours per week).
