This course addresses the origin and evolution of the African American dance tradition in popular culture from the minstrelsy to hip hop culture. Emphasis placed on the social, political, and economic environment in which it was fashioned. Pioneers, innovators, terminology, and styles will be identified. Course includes lectures, reading, audio/video analysis and discussion.
