Forensic Instrumental Analysis

Catalog description

Pre- or Co-requisite: CHEM 2020 - Quantitative Analysis ( 3 ) , CHEM 3100 - Organic Chemistry I ( 3 ) , and CHEM 3330 - Organic Chemistry Laboratory I ( 1 ) , with a “C” or higher, or otherwise approved by the department chair. This 3-hour course applies the principles of analytical chemistry and instrumental analysis to forensic chemistry. We will focus on understanding the fundamental principles of operation of spectroscopic, mass spectral and chromatographic techniques, as well as their realization in modern instrumentation for forensic analysis. By the end of this semester, students are expected to develop an understanding of the capabilities of above-mentioned analytical techniques and be able to suggest suitable instrumental methods for forensic trace analysis.
