Catalog description

This course introduces the art of singing in a jazz setting. It discusses the advanced techniques and concepts of vocal jazz performance and voice production including how the voice works, physiology and problems, how to keep the voice healthy, breathing, placement, how to interpret a song vocally, types of voice, group, and backing vocals. The course aims to help the student understand the advanced principles and concepts of vocal jazz, the advanced concepts of vocal jazz organization, and advanced singing exercises in two to six parts. It also discusses the basics of lead and backing vocals. It aims at developing performance skills in African-American music, jazz standards, jazz-fusion, Caribbean, and African musical styles. The course intends to develop students’ performance skills in various group formations such as duets, trios, quartets, quintets, etc.
