African American Women’s History from Slavery to Freedom

3 Lecture Hour(s) This course traces the experiences and struggles of African American women (1400-1865) from slavery through freedom. Their history reveals the evolution of gender roles, the politics of sexuality and reproduction, trauma studies, strategies of rebellion and resistance, the fight for civil rights, and methods of self-determination. This class will address how African American women’s history differs from men’s-specifically that African American women demonstrate unique identities in the defiance of authority, running away, marooning, suing for freedom, and gynecological resistance. No prerequisites.
