In such conditions the idea of the nation became utopian. The collapse of the Soviet Union engendered endless conflicts that resulted in the rise of ethno nationalism throughout Eastern Europe, and led to genocide in the Balkans and still threatens peace and stability in the region today. The critique of nationalism from the standpoint of democracy and the relationship between democracy and nationalism will also be examined.
