3 Lecture Hour(s) 0 Lab Hour(s) This course explores the use of living organisms or parts of them (e.g., enzymes) for the production of chemical or biological materials. The course emphasis is upon bioprocess development and bioreactor design. Topics covered include enzyme kinetics and biocatalysts, microbial growth and product formation, immobilization of enzymes and whole cells, bioreactor scale-up and design of batch and continuous bioreactors. Students are required to complete a bioprocess design or project with the option of using a process simulator such as Aspen.
