Honors World Religions

Catalog description

An introduction to the methods of the academic study of religion and analysis of the category of "religion." Provides a nonsectarian survey and analysis of the concepts, practices, and historical and cultural influences of major world religious traditions, which may include indigenous religions, such as Native American, African, Afro-Caribbean, and Oceanic religions; Asian-origin religions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Shinto; Middle Eastern-origin religions, such as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Zoroastrianism; and New Religious Movements, such as atheism, Scientology, Neopaganism, and New Age. This Honors course offers an enriched experience for students through limited class size, seminar format, discussions and projects generated and led by students, a focus on primary texts in translation and the application of higher level thinking and writing skills – analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Students may not receive credit for both HUM-10 and HUM-10H. 54.00 hours lecture. (Letter grade only)
