Art History of the Cinematic Image

Catalog description

This introductory course explores film as an art form through art historical and visual culture approaches. Students will learn to identify the basic formal components and language of film; to historicize the development of cinematic art styles and movements; and to place cinema into conversation with larger cultural ideologies as well as other visual arts forms. Particular emphasis will be placed on the histories and styles of experimental cinema, including Surrealism, Soviet Avant-Garde, French Nouvell Vague, etc. This course is appropriate for any student interested in the study of film, art, media studies, cultural history, and/or visual culture. 54.00 hours lecture. (Letter grade or Pass/No Pass option)
