Practicum on Small and Large Group Teaching IV

Catalog description

In this course, students will develop their ability to teach pre-clinical students in large and small group settings. They will become proficient in leadership skills including engaging students effectively on OMM topics as a table trainer, in tutoring sessions, and as a lab leader; giving effective, timely, and level-appropriate feedback; and public speaking with audience engagement and clear instruction. They will also become competent in objective grading measures for OMM diagnoses and techniques. By the end of this course, students should recognize when students need help with troubleshooting techniques in OMM lab or in organized tutoring session and utilize a variety of teaching techniques and clinical correlations to assist understanding of diagnosis and techniques. They will also develop leadership experience by acting as lab leader during OMM lab to gain competency at audience engagement, speaking clearly at appropriate speed and volume, projecting confidence without getting derailed by mistakes, answering student questions, and considering camera and viewing angles. Additionally, they will gain competence in objectively grading Practical Exams using a rubric-based grading sheet and confidently assess student techniques and diagnoses. This is a longitudinal course taking place during the second year of the OMM Concentration Program throughout the entire second half of the student's clinical academic year.
