Clinical Application of OMM Principles and Practices I

In this course, students will be presented with opportunities for continued clinical exposure to OMM in the outpatient setting, and in the context of primary or specialty care clinics. Students will advance in competency in the areas of treating patients with OMM, and smooth and concise patient case presentations, including incorporation of pertinent radiological, laboratory, and structural exam findings. They will work towards increased independence in formulating and directing an osteopathic treatment plan. By the end of this course, students should recognize when it is appropriate to incorporate or recommend osteopathic manipulative treatment in the outpatient setting for an individual patient case, based on chief complaint, history, osteopathic structural exam, and imaging and laboratory studies. They should also understand how to perform osteopathic manipulative treatment for acute vs. chronic musculoskeletal findings, and the role of patient instruction for home stretching regimens, as well as appropriate follow-up OMT for various medical conditions, and the range of expected responses to OMT. This is a longitudinal course taking place during the first year of the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Concentration Program throughout the entire first half of the student's clinical academic year
