Fiber-Optic Communication Technology

Catalog description

This course covers the basic topics related to optical fiber components used in telecommunication systems. It covers the bandwidth and rate capabilities of optical fibers, their properties and characteristics. Topics include light sources, lasers, semiconductors, optical detectors and their applications, principles of fiber-optic communications, modulation and multiplexing, short-haul and long-haul communication links, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and synchronous transfer mode (SONET) based networks. A term paper is required in this course. Prerequisite Course(s): Prerequisite: Take PHYS 150 and once course in this group: ETEC 230 or ETEC 231 Classroom Hours - Laboratory and/or Studio Hours – Course Credits: 3-0-3
