Fiber Optics Concepts I

Catalog description
Introductory topics in fiber optics communication. Evolution of fiber types. Guiding, dispersive and nonlinear properties of fibers; numerical aperture, attenuation, modal properties for multi-mode and single-mode fibers and bandwidth characteristics. Fiber design considerations. Optical sources - laser and LED's, optical detectors - PINand avalanche diodes. Transmitter system configuration, analysis and design. Receiver analysis and design, receiver performance. A total optical communication link design. Concepts and designs are reinforced through laboratory experiments. Classroom Hours - Laboratory and/or Studio Hours – Course Credits: 3-0-3
