This course introduces students to a global, comparative approach to the study of crime and criminal justice. This course will cover a wide range of topics over a large number of countries. Because of recent changes in communication, transportation, and commerce, crime has become a global phenomenon. This course will address this new reality and broadens the discussion of crime and social control to the global arena. Realizing that crime is no longer contained by geographic boundaries, this course will analyze where crime is occurring and which theories are true universally, not just in the United States. This course will critically examine the role of police in modern society. Emphasis will be based on providing students with a broad understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of law enforcement and how its function impacts society. Topics covered will include the function of police and law enforcement, the legitimacy of the policing role, the evolution of modern police practices, and contemporary issues in law enforcement.
