Catalog description

The primary concern of the course is to establish a general theory of art as an historical entity which is reflective of changing social values and technological advancements. Additionally, the student is provided with specific examples of the more important artists and art products of this era of mass communication. Slides, videotape, and assigned readings will be drawn from areas such as romanticism, expressionism and formalism, as well as areas which demonstrate ambiguity and absurdity, two general characteristics of much of 20th-century art. This course can be used in lieu of Media Research (COMM 620) for students who are specializing in computer graphics, painting, or studio art.
