Contemporary Biotechnology

Catalog description

An introduction into the realm of modern biotechnology and its application. This courses introduces the historical development of biotechnology and its contemporary applications, including, microbial fermentation/bioprocessing, bioreactors, production of fermentation products (protein therapeutics, monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, others) molecular diagnostics, bioremediation and environmental biotechnology, aquatic biotechnology, biowarfar and bioterrorism and nanobiotechnology. Further, societal issues involving ethical and moral implications, perceptions and fears, intellectual property, safety, risks and regulatory issues, as well as economics of biotechnology will be discussed. Prerequisite Course(s): Prerequisite: BIOL 341 Classroom Hours - Laboratory and/or Studio Hours – Course Credits: 3-0-3
