History and Theory of the City

Catalog description

This course examines the histories and theories of the city from antiquity to the present. It explores urban settlements across a variety of cultures and geographies, including Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe. Specific cities are discussed in relation to the spatial, socio-economic, environmental, and technological forces that brought them to fruition. Special attention is dedicated to the utopian tradition in urban reform that began during the Enlightenment. Contemporary urban challenges, such as environmental discrimination, climate crisis, planetary urbanization, and informal settlements, will also be discussed. Seminal readings on the city will be supplemented by field trips and on-site visits.
