Classic Drum Breaks: Sampling and Recording

This advanced music production course explores the cultural and creative impact of the most iconic drum breaks in recorded music. Each week, students study the origins of legendary breaks—how they were first performed and recorded—alongside their wide-ranging sampled uses, spanning from early hip-hop pioneers like Run DMC to modern artists such as Lana Del Rey. Students will dissect these recordings through active listening, analysis, and hands-on practice with sampling, chopping, and drum programming techniques that shaped decades of production. In the second half of each class, students transition from analysis to creation, tackling the question: ""How would you record drums that sound like this today?"" Working with live drum kits, microphones, and studio setups, they experiment with mic placement, performance approaches, and production strategies to recreate the sonic character of these breaks. Over the course of the semester, students not only gain deeper insight into sampling culture and recording craft, but also develop their own personalized drum libraries—an invaluable resource for future creative work.
