Mastering is the crucial final stage of audio production where creativity, technical skill, and a keen ear for detail come together to polish and prepare recordings for mass distribution. This process not only ensures quality control but also has the potential to elevate a mix through subtle to transformative techniques, turning it into a finished record. Historically, mastering was done only in specialized studios. However, with today's technology, engineers with the right skills, a laptop DAW, and a modest investment in monitors can achieve professional results from an every day space. This class combines demonstrations, discussions of theory and process, and hands-on practice to equip students with the skills and intentionality required for audio mastering. In this course students will learn to recognize the power and limitations of mastering, while developing the ability to master their own productions and work effectively with mastering professionals providing valuable insights for future collaborations in the industry. Emphasis is placed on deep listening and objective comparisons. Ample case studies will demonstrate a range of tools and approaches. Students will gain experience by mastering songs drawn from the instructor’s on-going mastering practice as well as peer-produced material. All student masters are presented in class for critiques and discussions.
