Advanced Ableton Live for Music Production & Sound Design
New York University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Ableton Live revolutionized the music production and live performance world when it was introduced over 25 years ago with its new digital interface and abilities to work with the pitch and timing of digital audio files. Originally designed as a creative tool for live performance with computers, it has become the global industry standard for designing live shows that integrate laptops, instruments and visuals, as well as one of the most popular tools for sound design and beat production. This course is for students who already have a strong background in Ableton Live and wish to develop the skills that will make them stronger producer/sound designers. We will review all of the major sound design tools in Live with the goal of creating elements like drums, basses, leads etc that can become our own custom made presets and sample packs. This course will also introduce students to the specialized uses of Ableton Live for designing custom plug-ins, live spectacles and installations. We will look at the tools that are often used to power live specta-cles, Broadway shows and installations: Max For Live, MIDI to DMX and Arduino. It will also will serve as the first step for students who one day wish to become Ableton Certified Trainers or to teach Ableton Live. We will have as our guest a representative from Ableton to take questions and discuss the direction of the company. The course will be divided into two parts. During the first half we will intensely study the major sound design tools in Ableton Live: Analog, Drift, Operator, Sampler, Simpler, Wavetable, Meld and Granulator III. We will also go far deeper into Ableton's Audio Effects and signal processing with Audio Effect Racks and Instrument Racks. I the second half of the course, we will explore MIDI routing and integrating hardware synths/drum ma-chines into Live, basic Max for Live and how to integrate visuals…
