If you were to ask 10 people the simple question, “What does a record producer do?” odds are you would get 10 different answers - or perhaps 10 different confused, blank stares. The function and value of a record producer is indeed hard to define. One correct answer – my answer, in fact - could be, “making tangible, or real, what was once simply a musical idea, concept, or desire.” To that point in some languages the term "realizer" is used in place of record producer; in French, réalisateur. This realization can range from influencing the outcome of one song to an artist’s entire career. The act of music production may influence sound, performance, song selection, composition, arranging, budgeting, production logistics, engineering, mixing, etc. In short – a producer does (or finds professionals to do) whatever is needed, at any given point in the record making process, to best ensure reaching the elusive goal of artistic and/or commercial success. The purpose of Producing The Record is to teach technical proficiency, self-sufficiency, and creative methodology, in the area of studio-based music production - better stated as realization. Students are exposed to a variety of complimentary realization methods through case study, traditional lectures, and hands-on experiential training. The curricular approach is holistic and immersive, with lessons covering the entire range of disciplines involved in production: musicianship, technical and engineering skills, project management and logistics, historical reference, entrepreneurship, and ethical business and creative conduct.
