Psychotherapy Skills Practice

Catalog description

In this course we will discuss a wide range of clinical interview techniques and clinical interventions that are used by psychologists, when they treat patients with mental health problems. We will start with a discussion about the profession of psychologist, and we will address the cultural differences with regards to therapeutic interactions, graduate trainings, accreditation, and continued professional development for licensed clinicians. Then we will spend the majority of this course exploring different supportive and expressive techniques that can be used to support patients, including active listening skills, how to ask open questions, paraphrasing, and making interpretations. Prerequisite: PSYC-SHU 101 Introduction to Psychology Fulfillment: Social Science Focus course Psychology track 300 level.
