PHYS-GA 9011
Special Topics in General Relativity
New York University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The goal of this course is to learn advanced topics in general rela4vity essen4al for pioneering research in classical and quantum gravity. The covered topics will go beyond what is usually taught in graduate and advanced undergraduate level general rela4vity. The course will go into the causal structure of space4me including no4ons of causality and Cauchy surfaces. It will build on this to introduce the Penrose and Hawking singularity theorems regarding the formation of black hole or cosmological singulari4es. Furthermore, the course will delve deeper into the physics of black holes, including their exo4c proper4es in higher dimensions as well as their thermodynamics features.
