Ambulatory Otolaryngology (ENT)

Catalog description

Otolaryngology and head and neck surgery aimed for future internal medicine physicians, general surgeons and pediatricians. This course provides integrative knowledge in head and neck, sinus, larynx and ear anatomy and physiology useful for clinical practice in general medicine. The objective is for students to learn basic anatomy and physiology, a proper otolaryngology examination, and how to recognize and manage common otolaryngologic diseases such as sinusitis, hearing loss, vertigo, oral lesions, head and neck cancers, salivary gland disease, thyroid disease. The student will spend time in an office-based head & neck practice, and with a general otolaryngologist in a local practice. Depending on interests and availability, time may be spent with an NYU Langone Hospital- Long Island pediatric otolaryngologist. In addition to office-based otolaryngology, students will participate in hospital-based patient care and surgeries. Finally, an experienced speech language pathologist working in the practice will introduce the student to speech and swallowing physiology, evaluation and treatment of voice and swallowing problems that are frequently encountered by general practitioners. In addition to clinical teaching, the elective includes didactic and self-learning modules on anatomy, physiology, and semiology of otolaryngology diseases to integrate theoretical knowledge with patient care. Near the completion of the elective each student will do one presentation on a given topic.
