Otolaryngology Advanced
New York University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This is an advanced 4-week elective that seeks to build on otolaryngologic knowledge and experiences gained in the pre-clerkship and clerkship years. It may be used to build upon experience from the 2-week Otolaryngology Introductory Elective or the 2-week Otolaryngology Surgery-related Elective (SRE). As an advanced elective, students will be expected to serve at the level of a sub-intern. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will gain this experience through actively participating in all aspects of patient care, including daily working rounds, out-patient clinical experience, in-patient care and assisting in the operating room. Experience is provided in general otolaryngology as well as all subspecialty areas of otolaryngology; this includes head and neck oncology, otology and neurology, pediatric otolaryngology, laryngology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, sleep medicine and rhinology/skull base surgery. All students will be taught how to perform a thorough head and neck examination, including flexible fiberoptic endoscopy. Students will have exposure to and teaching in the management of common otolaryngologic emergencies, including head and neck infections, acute upper airway obstruction, epistaxis and facial trauma.
