Catalog description

The elective provides an opportunity for the medical student to participate in the management of female patients with urogynecologic conditions. The student will gain an in-depth exposure to conditions of pelvic floor dysfunction, lower urinary tract disorders, urogynecologic testing, evaluation and treatment of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. The student will participate in the evaluation of urogynecologic patients in the office setting with a variety of female urologic problems including pelvic organ prolapse, urge and stress incontinence, overflow, voiding dysfunction, urogenital fistula, fecal incontinence and painful bladder syndromes. Students will be exposed to urogynecologic testing including multichannel urodynamics and cystoscopy in the office setting where they will also be involved in medical and conservative treatments. They will also assist in the operating room and participate in the surgical treatment during vaginal, abdominal, robotic procedures and neuromodulation. The students will be involved in the perioperative care for all urogynecologic patients. There will be formal and informal didactics along with bedside teaching with attendings and residents daily. The division of Urogynecology has had an active research interest and is currently engaged in ongoing projects. Interested students are encouraged to participate in the ongoing clinical research. Previous students have published their research in peer reviewed journals and presented their data at national meetings.
