Catalog description

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Elective will increase the medical student's breath of knowledge regarding high risk pregnancies. Students will participate in the diagnosis and care of mothers and fetuses of high risk pregnancies in the ante-, intra- and post-partum periods as part of the MFM care team in the ultrasound unit, ambulatory and inpatient consultation sessions and office hours, as well as in intensive care settings. Preconception consultations, optimization of maternal and fetal well-being throughout gestation, prenatal diagnosis and diagnostic testing (amniocentesis, chorionic villous sampling), and aneuploidy screening techniques are emphasized. The student works directly with the house staff, fellows and attending MFM physicians and will attend and participate in all conferences, lectures and patient care meetings within our division as well as weekly Grand Rounds for the department.
