Human Migration and Health

Catalog description

This course critically examines the complex health dynamics of global human migration, exploring the sociopolitical, economic, and historical forces that shape the health trajectories of migrant, refugee, and internally displaced populations. Consideration is given to the ways in which the migration transition, spanning pre-departure to integration, shapes distinct health vulnerabilities and assets that influence health outcomes across the lifespan. Through the use of interdisciplinary frameworks and contemporary case studies, students will evaluate how immigration status, political determinants, language, and cultural factors influence access to and quality of care within health systems, with a particular focus on the US context. The course will emphasize evidence-based policy analysis and intervention design, with opportunities for experiential learning at sites across New York City's diverse immigrant communities to apply theoretical concepts to real-world challenges.
