Catalog description

In this 1-credit graded seminar, students explore various aspects of the intern's fieldwork site through the lens of social scientific theory on the nature of work. The goal of the course is to develop an in-depth, nuanced understanding of your internship site including its culture, its policies, and the context in which it operates. Methods and examples from a range of fields (e.g, anthropology, sociology, law, and business) provide guidance for describing and analyzing workplaces. The bulk of the semester is dedicated to equipping students with ethnographic methods and strategies to approach their internship as a site of research. We also read scholarly and journalistic work that examines the state of the contemporary U.S. workplace and ourselves as workers. Please note: This course is only open to CAS undergraduate students and requires permission of the instructor to enroll.
