Advanced Social Policy: Behavioral Health

Catalog description

This Advanced Social Policy section on Behavioral Health provides an overview of behavioral health systems of care using historical and contemporary perspectives in the U.S., along with definitions and key concepts in behavioral health. In addition, this course will cover the roles of various stakeholders involved in behavioral health care, including federal, state, and local governments, as well as non-profit and for-profit sectors. Special attention will also be paid to the advocacy groups and their influence on policy formation and implementation. The course will then cover aspects concerning policy regulation, including key policies that have shaped behavioral health care, regulatory frameworks governing behavioral health services, and the impact of the Affordable Care Act on behavioral health services. Students will also learn about the financing issues, including the funding sources (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, out-of-pocket), budgeting and financial management, and economic challenges and funding gaps. The course will end with discussions of the current trends and issues concerning behavioral health, such as the role of technology and access and equity. Ultimately, students are expected to appreciate the evolving natures of behavioral health systems of care in the United States with essential knowledge and skills in understanding and applying behavioral health care to individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
