New Orleans & the Jazz Experience

Catalog description

A one credit, seven week overview of the development of music & culture in New Orleans. Through listening examples, historical & fictional accounts, students will experience the development of jazz. From the earliest manifestations of Creole culture to the unique development of jazz as we know if, the course will trace this phenomenon through readings, written & brief oral assignments linked to specific historical figures. By the end of the course the students will have a clear understanding of the unique circumstances & events that led to the development of jazz music as we know if today.
