Nephrology 4-Week

Catalog description

This is a 4-week elective that seeks to build on nephrology knowledge, and experiences gained in the pre-clerkship and clerkship years. It may be used to build upon experience from the 2-week Nephrology Elective. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the core principles, foundational knowledge, and essential skills relevant to the specialty through encounters with a diverse range of cases reflective of this specialty. Students will become part of the Nephrology Division and participate in all its activities. The Division is responsible for the patients at Bellevue Hospital, Tisch Hospital and Veterans Hospital with kidney disease, electrolyte disorders, secondary or refractory hypertension and kidney transplant recipients. Rotators will see these patients and discuss them with the nephrology fellows and present them on daily rounds to the attending nephrologist. Students will attend all academic activities of the division including clinical conferences, lectures, seminars and journal clubs. Nephrology clinics meet at Bellevue and the VA and rotators have the opportunity to see patients with kidney disease of all types. There are also subspecialty clinics focused on the care of patients with kidneys stones, complications of cancer care and kidney transplants.
