Concepts of stress and strain in a continuous fluid. Derivation of the Navier-Stokes equations and their exact and approximate solutions. Laminar boundary layer theory. Instability theory and transition. Introduction to turbulence. Turbulent free-shear flows and boundary layers. Thermal boundary layers and compressible boundary layers. Computer applications. | Prerequisite: ME-GY 6043 or adviser approval.
