Catalog description

This course examines the role of visuality in the construction of scientific knowledge, artistic renditions of science, and the modern emergence of visual technologies. Imagery has been key to the exercise of power through such practices as cataloging and identification; the designation of abnormality, disease, and pathologies; medical diagnosis; scientific experimentation; and the marketing of science and medicine. We will examine visual technologies in domains of psychiatry and criminology, eugenics, genetics, pharmacology, and scientific activism.
