Master Class in Documentary

Catalog description

This class focuses on first-person documentaries, in which filmmakers embrace their own voices, experiences, and perspectives while exploring broader societal or political issues. We will watch films (and excerpts), analyze their style and process, and meet some of the filmmakers as guest speakers. Assignments include writing response papers and creating short first-person documentaries (3-10 minutes). Various prompts will guide you in exploring your subjective point of view in storytelling—whether autobiographical or focused on your perspective about others, a place, a community, a phenomenon, or an event. Professional cameras are not required (using iPhone to record videos and audio is acceptable). If you don't know how to edit videos, please discuss alternatives with me. Projects will be evaluated based on point of view, creative ideas, and effort rather than technical video quality. *(Content Advisory: *This course includes the screening of documentary films that may contain challenging and sensitive material, including but not limited to representations of war, violence, abuse, drug use, and death. Students are encouraged to engage critically while also caring for their well-being, and may step out or speak with the instructor as needed.
