Beginning Japanese 1

Catalog description

Beginning Japanese 1 is for students with no prior knowledge of Japanese. It serves as an introduction to Japanese and focuses on the four skills of language study: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course will prepare students to communicate smoothly, in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner, in Japanese. Students will learn how to fulfill simple everyday life tasks in Japanese, including introducing themselves in professional settings, asking for directions, going shopping, and ordering in a restaurant. Students will master the polite speech style, polite predicate conjugations, and the function of basic particles in Japanese. Students will act out common real-world interactions in Japanese in the classroom. The course does not fulfill the prerequisites for Japanese II ( EAST-UA 248 ) offered at NYU. It covers half of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) level A1.1.
