Readings in Modern Italian Literature

Catalog description

The course covers Italian literature from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, from Leopardi to Elena Ferrante, with particular attention to developments and movements in Italian culture such as: the impact of twentieth-century wars and of Fascism; the rise of Neorealism; the avant-garde; and the recent growth of women's voices and multicultural approaches. Literary texts are accompanied by visual art, photography, music, and cinema. Readings are in Italian with recourse to English translations; teaching is in Italian, but with accommodations and supporting use of English.
