Advanced Lab: ABC Browser Circus on Tour (Mobile)

Hardly any application is as ubiquitous as the browser – pre-installed on every phone and computer. Moreover, the browser, has no on singular purpose, but is merely a shell for our code to run, visuals to be rendered and interactions to take place within. On mobile devices in particular, the browser’s access to sensors such as GPS, gyroscope, cameras, and the conception of websites as “applications” offer unique opportunities for creative interventions. This course introduces the students to the history of the internet, the World Wide Web, and to the browser as a cultural object and its role in (net)art; it teaches web development and guides the students to create three web-based projects. ABC puts a particular focus on mobile browsers. In this advanced course, familiarity with web development, fundamental programming concepts and JavaScript are expected. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or above. Fulfillment: IMA Advanced elective; IMB major IMA/IMB elective.
