Catalog description

This course introduces the principles of design for digital fabrication, focusing on the transition from digital design to physical production. Once a specialized process, digital fabrication is now more accessible than ever, empowering a broader audience to bring ideas to life. You will learn to use Design software like Rhinoceros, alongside digital fabrication technologies such as laser cutters, CNC milling, 3D printers, 3D scanning and more. You will explore how these tools allow you to create functional, conceptual, and aesthetically compelling artifacts. The course also covers parametric design using Grasshopper, allowing for experimentation with complex geometries and algorithm-driven structures. Emphasis will be put on hands-on experimentation, guided by an iterative design process with a focus on conceptual development, prototyping, and refinement. Prerequisite: None. Fulfillment: IMA major elective/ IMB major elective.
