HSS-SHEP is a longitudinal, interdisciplinary course that foregrounds the complex ethical, social, and systemic dimensions of health care delivery. Class sessions will feature active learning methods such as case-based discussions, interactive lectures, and guided small-group work. Students will think critically about our health care systems and structures, explore strategies to improve population health and mitigate disparities, engage narrative and historical perspectives on health and illness, learn to capably analyze the ethical complexities of modern medicine, and reflect on their evolving identities as future physicians. Phase 1 topics include, among others: health equity, informed consent, organ transplantation, reproductive ethics, quality improvement, health care policy and economics, clinical informatics, and artificial intelligence.
